In 2017 I was in the middle of graduate school at Western Michigan when I decided it was either now or never to explore a budding passion of mine; videography. Without much experience handling a camera, I accepted an opportunity to learn how to film weddings from a friend. Between teaching courses and working on my thesis, I figured another job would offer a change of scenery and help me build another skillset. I never could've known what sort of journey I was embarking on.
Fast forward about four years and almost 50 weddings later I took a stab at opening my own wedding videography company. I will forever be proud of my journey from filming for other companies to owning my own videography business. Working under the tutelage of others allowed the space for this newfound skill set to blossom. And I learned that there was something so special about being present for the moment that two people commit themselves to one another. A venture that I thought would hopefully be an extra source of income evolved into real pursuit of passion. But it was still missing something.
It was missing me.
I was operating the old company Wizard of Oz style; it was devoid of the emotion, personality, and passion that makes me, me. So, this time around I built a business whose mission, vision, and pillars are based entirely around my values, how I was raised, and what I stand for. Throughout this journey I've learned to “always be who you are, authentically” and my hope is that leading a business instead of running a business attracts those with values similar to mine.
